Abstract

Macrophage activation syndrome (SAM) is a rare but life-threatening disease. It is characterized by
a set of non-specific clinical and biological signs, but the combination of which must evoke the
diagnosis. These abnormalities result from cytokine dysregulation and benign lympho-histiocytoma.
Among several etiologies, viral infection holds an important place. This is the case of our patient
who was admitted for viral encephalitis following which he developed the SAM.
Keywords: viral encephalitis; macrophage activation syndrome; prolonged fever; pancytopenia.
